ABOUT

I’m Ellie

I am an artist and part-time special needs teacher.

I create glass sculptures and works to commissions and now run relaxed and popular workshops in my home studio in Hassocks, West Sussex, giving people the opportunity to spend a day or half day learning a new skill and creating their own piece of glass art.

Since completing a BA Hons in Visual Arts specializing in ceramic sculptures designed for the garden and qualifying as a teacher, I have continued to create artwork inspired by nature.

For many years I created garden mosaics, accepting commissions as well as designing and selling my own pieces. My love of mosaics naturally evolved into working with coloured and textured glass and this has now become my passion.

Once I had mastered the craft of creating leaded stained glass windows, I was keen to use these skills to make pieces that would work beautifully outside. My designs are inspired by my love of nature, plants and my love of colour. . I love creating contemporary and new botanical designs from glass. I like to combine working with coloured glass and being surrounded by nature, both in my garden and further afield. This has led me to create unique glass garden art and bring me to where I now am. I feel very lucky to live and work in the Sussex South Downs.

I love working with coloured and textured glass. It brings me joy.

I find it a therapeutic, meditative process and am fully in the present when creating my art.

Every step in the creative process gives me an enormous sense of well-being. It is as rewarding as being a special needs teacher where, as with my art, I try to create an environment of positivity, calm and joy for the amazing children and colleagues I work with. Mindfulness is important to me.

Playing with colour

so that the pieces sit harmoniously in the landscape and in client’s gardens, gives me great satisfaction and fulfilment.

I love the way that the frames oxidise over time, weathering to a warm orange hue. The frames can also be coated in any colour for a stylish, sleek look.

The steel frames are all created by hand by the talented blacksmiths at Horsham Forge or by my friend and blacksmith artist Ricky Delaney

Eco credentials

I am very aware of my carbon footprint and as a business and individual, aim to reduce this. I use my cut off pieces of glass from my larger projects to create delicate and beautiful ‘stems’ of plants and flowers and other glass gifts. All my waste lead is collected and taken to be recycled and reused into new lead products. I am to only use recycled packaging. My glass art should last longer than a lifetime so is a great investment as opposed to buying and throwing away cheaper, mass produced art.
